Domestic Politics

Another barrier explaining why nothing has been done about climate change is domestic politics. Democracies are run by the people, who as explained on the human psyche page, are usually lacking motivation to change on complex issues like climate change. Other governments like authoritarian regimes usually do not take input from the people. Even in democracies where people want change, action from the government can be tough to come by. Each country sits in a unique economic position.

In order to highlight the difference in domestic politics around the world, take a look at the two countries below. The United States of America and Haiti are on completely different sides of the economic spectrum, but both harbor difficulties to national change.

USA

The United States of America dominates as one of the most powerful countries in the world. However, in order for change to happen on a national level, a lot has to happen. The legislation process in the USA is filled with debates and votes that often see bills thrown to the curb. If enough motivated people convince a congressperson to sponsor a bill about climate change, the bill must pass through the House, the Senate, and then the President. From 2019-2021, only 4% of proposed laws became enacted, or passed. So the chances of producing change on a national level for developed countries like the USA are slim to none.

Haiti

South of the Unites States lies Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. Haitians do not have the luxury of spending time pushing for a congressperson to represent a bill because instead they are worried about their next meal. Haitians live uncomfortably and likely are not focused on the large issue of climate change because their issues fall on their harsh daily life. Haiti has already fallen victim to climate change as numerous natural disasters and rising sea levels continue to damage Haiti today. Even if Haitians wanted change, their government, like many other third world countries, is often corrupted. Haiti specifically has battled corruption for decades since the 1980's.
